Stand Tall For Jon Greiner

The 2006 Weber County Republican thorobreds are nearing the final turn, and preparing to enter the homestretch. The November election is coming up fast. While most local Republican candidates seem to be mainly "loping along" without noticeable opposition, there's one of our GOP candidates who's drawing severe heat -- our newcomer District 18 Senate candidate Jon Greiner. The Standard-Examiner has flailed him three days running on its front pages -- and very mercilously. They've effectively told him that he should simply call off his race.

We think Chief Greiner should "stick with" his campaign (at all cost,) ignore the "liberal editors" at the Standard-Examiner and maybe even go on the offensive. Stuart Reid, Chief Greiner's opponent, is definitely NO POLITICAL PRIZE, we assure you.

As Jon and I discussed during tonight's telephone conversation... Jon has at least one "ace in the hole" re the purported "Hatch Act problem."

Don't believe everything you read in the Standard-Examiner. Of course you already knew that.

We think we should all "Stand Tall"and support Jon Greiner, regardless of our internecine party differences; and not let Stuart Reid, a flaming Big Spender, and Utah's foremost proponent of municipal "Big Debt," to occupy a seat in the Utah legislature.

We'd suggest that anyone interested in achieving a Republican victory in Senate District 18, and preserving Republican stength in the senate, volunteer their services to, and vote for, Ogden's own Jon Greiner. If you have philosphical differences, they can be worked out later, we think.

Do Tax Cuts Cost the Government Money?

By Ron Paul
Republican US House Representative
TX District 14
Texas Straight Talk

Whenever tax cuts are discussed in Washington, the media and most politicians use the phrase, “cost to government.” “How much will this tax cut cost the government?” we are asked, as though some crime is being contemplated when we consider reducing taxes. The American people have every right to fund the federal government at whatever level they deem acceptable, and if they choose-- through their elected representatives-- to reduce that funding level, they are not somehow injuring the government. If Congresses passes a new law that results in you paying $1000 less in taxes next year, have you taken something from the government that rightfully belongs to it? Or has the government simply taken less from you?

You don’t cost the government money, the government costs you money!

Of course it’s reasonable to demand that politicians cut spending when they cut taxes. That’s the definition of real fiscal conservatism: government should not take too much from the private economy in taxes, but neither should it spend too much and run up deficits. That’s why I vote against the wasteful appropriations bills that relentlessly increase federal spending year after year.

I reject the notion that tax cuts harm the economy. The economy suffers when government takes money from your paycheck that you otherwise would spend, save, or invest. Taxes never create prosperity. Private-sector innovation and productivity are the engines that drive our economy, regardless of what politicians tell us.

Tax reduction is my first priority in Congress. The reality is that most working Americans lose about half of their incomes to federal, state, and local taxes. “Tax Freedom Day,” representing the portion of the year you must work to pay for government at all levels, is roughly June 1st for most Americans. Imagine all of your hard work this year between January and the end of May going to the government!

One tax in particular should be eliminated as soon as possible-- the tax on Social Security benefits. Those benefits were never taxed between the 1930s and 1984. Treating them as taxable income represents nothing more than a trick to reduce Social Security benefits by stealth. I supported legislation that successfully repealed a 1993 tax increase on benefits, and my own bill, HR 180, would go further and eliminate all taxes on Social Security. Our seniors paid taxes throughout their working lives to fund the Social Security system, and it is immoral to tax them again on their benefits.

Various other taxes also must be reduced. Capital gains taxes are terribly counterproductive, punishing those who save and invest. Payroll taxes impose a tremendous compliance burden on businesses, especially smaller entrepreneurs who cannot hire an accounting department. Federal gas taxes should be slashed to provide taxpayers relief at the pump. Most importantly, federal spending must be dramatically reduced so that all Americans can go back to working for themselves instead of working to pay their taxes.

Don't Let Senator Rangel Get Ahold of Our Pocketbooks

The following missive was sent to us by Weber County GOP stalwart Christie Moore, Weber County Republican District 7 Chair:

Dear Christie,

Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel recently "vowed to put all of President Bush's 2001 and 2003 tax cuts on the chopping block."

He may wield the chairman's gavel over the tax-writing committee next year.

Imagine what will happen to your family tax bill if he carries through on that threat. To get rid of all the tax relief, all he has to do is...nothing. The tax cuts all expire soon. Imagine the consequences for our economy. Imagine how you would feel if you did nothing to stop him.

The Club for Growth has rapidly grown over the years because we have people like you, the best members in America. They're smart, and ahead of the curve.

The stakes are high in the up-coming election. We thank Christie Moore for bringing this grassroots organization to our attention.

The message is quite clear, we think: CONTINUE TO VOTE REPUBLICAN, and support grass-roots organizations which support traditional GOP principles.

As an aside, we'll no doubt be losing one of the Weber County's Republican Party's best to our party leadership, when GOP Party Vice-Chair Jan Zogmaister is elected to Camille Cain's Weber County Commission seat.

We suggest that Christie Moore be appointed in Jan's place as GOP Party Vice-Chair. She's steadfastly worked her way up through our county GOP organization, and demonstrates the very highest degree of intelligence, and adherence to traditional GOP principles.

Your blogmeister can't think of anyone better to take Jan's place, although Leg 6 Chair Terry Thompson would be a top-notch choice too, we think... for similar reasons....

Time to start thinking about this latter point, we thinks.
