By Terry Thompson
Candidate: Weber County SheriffThroughout my life and Law Enforcement career, I have supported, upheld, and defended constitutional principle. The freedom and liberty inherent in this inspired document that governs our country is a God-given foundation for a free people. Our founding father’s purpose on this earth was to produce a form of government that would allow a free people to exist without subjugated rule of an oppressive few. The courage of early colonial patriots forged this country, and with the hand of the almighty, successfully established a free country and a free people—with a government that does not give fundamental rights, but recognizes God-given rights dispersed equally to all men.
At a young age, I toured our nation’s Capitol with my family and felt a deep patriotic love of country through the example of my parents. The awe inspiring edifices proclaiming our liberties, our founding fathers, and our nation’s presidents, made me eternally proud to be an American. Colonial patriots, many with personal wealth, risked their lives, fortunes, and all that they possessed for love of God and Country. Battles fought by brave soldiers, fitting memorials in remembrance of sacrifice in defense of God and Country, sparked a love for our military, veterans, and fallen, that grips my soul to this day. Revolutionary conflict and civil war sites rendered a solemn, grateful appreciation for the struggle, even an internal struggle, of so many to establish and maintain this free Nation.
As a young Sheriff’s Deputy with five years experience, I testified in legislative committee hearings chaired by a high ranking Law Enforcement Official and personal friend at our State Capitol. I believed that submitting my testimony was the right thing to do in defending constitutional principle, although in opposition to him. I knew I was potentially risking my law enforcement career that had just really begun, but mustered the courage to let the chips fall where they may. I will always respect this Official, who never allowed my public opposition to his position, affect our relationship or my career.
Over the years, I have written numerous articles, guest commentaries and letters to the editor, in support of Constitutional principle; primarily in opposition to attempts to diminish our God-given right to self preservation guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. While some within the law enforcement community have occasionally scoffed at my “activism”, I have not allowed the nay-saying to sway my commitment to defending Constitutional principle. I have not allowed myself to place my own ambitions above doing the right thing. I truly believe that my success in my chosen profession is largely due to this commitment. Far too many law enforcement administrators allow what I call “administrator’s disease” to affect their judgment; losing focus of what is right due to the subtle seduction of political correctness.
“The Sheriff’s job is an integral part of the American dream. If you do your job with honesty and fidelity, keeping your oath to your citizens, the dream is kept alive and America will survive!”
-Sheriff Richard Mack-
I become a catalyst for the enduring freedom enshrined in our Constitution by having the courage to do the right thing. I commit today to accept nothing less than supporting, upholding, and defending the Constitution. As Sheriff, I will use my influence to protect and defend the rights of the people enumerated in our Constitution and Bill of Rights. The number one priority and mission of any righteous government instituted by man is the safety and security of the people. Safety and security of the people is the Constitutional mandate of the Sheriff. I have pledged my sacred honor to the people for whom I serve, and, as Sheriff; I will serve the people.
