Terry Thompson Candidate Statement: Thompson For Weber County Sheriff

By Terry Thompson
Candidate: Weber County Sheriff

Greetings!

I am seeking your support as a candidate for the office of Sheriff in Weber County. I have served with the Weber County Sheriff’s Office for over 20 years. Nearly three years ago, Sheriff Brad Slater invited me to become a member of his Executive Command Staff as his Chief Deputy. Working closely with Brad on a daily basis has been an immense privilege for me. I have learned to love and respect his steady leadership, wisdom, and knowledge of law enforcement and related issues. This opportunity to provide leadership at the highest level of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office has prepared me to serve as your Weber County Sheriff.

I am currently serving as the Enforcement Division Chief Deputy. I am responsible for managing a $10 million budget, 120 employees, law enforcement contracts with eight cities, 17 schools, and quality law enforcement services to approximately 100,000 Weber County residents. The Enforcement Division encompasses Patrol functions, Investigations, Community Resource Officers, Professional Standards and Training, Crime Scene Investigations (CSI), Emergency Management, Animal Control, Search & Rescue, Marine Patrol, etc.

For the last three years as Chief Deputy over the Corrections Division, I have been responsible for managing a $22 million budget, 230 employees, two jail facilities, and an average of 1,150 offenders comprised of County, State, US Marshal, and Immigration inmates. I have overseen the 2nd District Courts, Juvenile Courts, and Ogden and Weber Justice Courts. I certified with the first group to successfully complete the Utah Sheriff’s Association “Jail Commander Certification Academy” in Utah. I have been privileged to serve in virtually every capacity within the Sheriff’s Office over my two decades of service.

Throughout my tenure with Weber County, and most recently as an Executive Command Staff member, trust of public funds has been essential to operations of the Sheriff’s Office. Society is experiencing difficult times. As the slowdown in the economy has affected Weber County, the Sheriff’s Office has taken bold steps to remain healthy. Over the last three years, we have anticipated the need to reduce overall expenses, thus eliminating over $1 million of the Sheriff’s Office budget. Due to our successful forecast of challenging times, we have been proactive and stayed ahead of the game. In spite of a reduced budget, we were able to retain all existing staff without reducing pay or rank, and staff has continued to demonstrate a firm professionalism.

Finally, as a Weber County resident, your safety and security will continue to remain my focus. Your quality of life will continue to remain my top priority. I am committed to do the right thing to continue to move forward to provide for the safety and security of Weber County residents.

The Constitution - Foundation of Freedom

By Terry Thompson
Candidate: Weber County Sheriff

Throughout my life and Law Enforcement career, I have supported, upheld, and defended constitutional principle. The freedom and liberty inherent in this inspired document that governs our country is a God-given foundation for a free people. Our founding father’s purpose on this earth was to produce a form of government that would allow a free people to exist without subjugated rule of an oppressive few. The courage of early colonial patriots forged this country, and with the hand of the almighty, successfully established a free country and a free people—with a government that does not give fundamental rights, but recognizes God-given rights dispersed equally to all men.

At a young age, I toured our nation’s Capitol with my family and felt a deep patriotic love of country through the example of my parents. The awe inspiring edifices proclaiming our liberties, our founding fathers, and our nation’s presidents, made me eternally proud to be an American. Colonial patriots, many with personal wealth, risked their lives, fortunes, and all that they possessed for love of God and Country. Battles fought by brave soldiers, fitting memorials in remembrance of sacrifice in defense of God and Country, sparked a love for our military, veterans, and fallen, that grips my soul to this day. Revolutionary conflict and civil war sites rendered a solemn, grateful appreciation for the struggle, even an internal struggle, of so many to establish and maintain this free Nation.

As a young Sheriff’s Deputy with five years experience, I testified in legislative committee hearings chaired by a high ranking Law Enforcement Official and personal friend at our State Capitol. I believed that submitting my testimony was the right thing to do in defending constitutional principle, although in opposition to him. I knew I was potentially risking my law enforcement career that had just really begun, but mustered the courage to let the chips fall where they may. I will always respect this Official, who never allowed my public opposition to his position, affect our relationship or my career.

Over the years, I have written numerous articles, guest commentaries and letters to the editor, in support of Constitutional principle; primarily in opposition to attempts to diminish our God-given right to self preservation guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. While some within the law enforcement community have occasionally scoffed at my “activism”, I have not allowed the nay-saying to sway my commitment to defending Constitutional principle. I have not allowed myself to place my own ambitions above doing the right thing. I truly believe that my success in my chosen profession is largely due to this commitment. Far too many law enforcement administrators allow what I call “administrator’s disease” to affect their judgment; losing focus of what is right due to the subtle seduction of political correctness.

“The Sheriff’s job is an integral part of the American dream. If you do your job with honesty and fidelity, keeping your oath to your citizens, the dream is kept alive and America will survive!”
-Sheriff Richard Mack-

I become a catalyst for the enduring freedom enshrined in our Constitution by having the courage to do the right thing. I commit today to accept nothing less than supporting, upholding, and defending the Constitution. As Sheriff, I will use my influence to protect and defend the rights of the people enumerated in our Constitution and Bill of Rights. The number one priority and mission of any righteous government instituted by man is the safety and security of the people. Safety and security of the people is the Constitutional mandate of the Sheriff. I have pledged my sacred honor to the people for whom I serve, and, as Sheriff; I will serve the people.

“One man with courage makes a majority”
-Andrew Jackson-

Attention all Weber County GOP Precinct Chairs, Vice Chairs, appointed Neighborhood GOP Precinct Caucus Hosts, and registered Weber County Republicans in general:

Please be advised, that in preparation for our March 23, 2010 Neighborhood Caucus meetings, the Weber County Republican Party Executive Committee has now calendered a full Caucus Meeting Host Training Session as follows:

Where: Ogden Preparatory Academy, 215 E 22nd St, Ogden, UT
When: Thursday, March 11, 2010, 6:00 p.m.
The scheduling of this event presents an opportunity for all Weber County GOP Caucus Hosts to kill two birds with one stone, i.e.:
